TIme of Wonder Module 7

Book Summary: The book starts out with a list of all the islands that are near the one you are on. It never says where exactly one is, so anyone can imagine that these islands are near them. The books takes you on a day at island, how the weather changes and the clouds float over darkening the ground. Then the rain begins and how the air smells. Is talks about live on an island, the different boats, what they need to run them and what is needed to secure then in a hurricane. The description of a hurricane and what preparations are needed to stay safe. The book is not written from a boys or a girls point of view so any reader can take the roll as they read though this book.
APA Reference of Book:
McCloskey, R. (1957). Time of wonder. New York: Viking Press.

Impressions:  It was a nice return to when life was simpler. The description, the drawing , the wording all were done nicely. Even though this book was written in 1957, the clothing were dated, and mom wearing a dress gathering the suitcases to take to the boat, the dreamy state of the vacation, the exploring, the discoveries, the calming of the sea as it makes it music arriving at the beach makes me want to go on vacation, almost. The drawings are wonderful and detailed, like the books I remember growing up on.

Professional Review:
Robert McCloskey’s watercolor illustrations in Time of Wonder are truly beautiful. The story of a family spending their summer at the Maine seashore is brought to life by the 63 pages filled with watercolor images that change from bright blue-to-blue grey. The flowers are bright sunshiny yellow, and the trees are forest green. But what caught my eye the most was the last page displaying a multi-colored sky. As far as the story itself goes, the main mode of travel is by boat, clams are often on the menu, freshly dug up from the beach, and everybody knows everybody. It's a story about the way life used to be, when kids could feel free to explore on their own, sailing around the bay for hours, exploring islands, having picnics and jumping off of rocks into salty water.

Library Uses:
The watercolors would be great pictures  discussion for an art class.
